All School End-of-the-Year Picnic
Held on the last day of school at Peterson Park the entire student body along with teachers, staff and families enjoy a wonderful time at the End-of-the-Year picnic. Group games and a barbeque lunch are highlights of this fun event!
Students in Grades 5 - 8 have the opportunity to join the Algoma Public School band. Eligibility of students wishing to participate in band will depend on academic efforts, attitudes and conduct, both in school and at school functions. To maintain eligibility, students must display a pattern of sufficient progress.
Parents and guardians of band students are responsible for the transportation of their children to and from band practice. Students are allowed to leave SMS during the designated band practice times. Sharing the driving responsibilities between parents has worked well over the years.
Students at SMS have the opportunity to participate in basketball for girls and boys in grades 5 - 8.
Blue Jay Run/Walk
Held in the fall, the Blue Jay Run/Walk promotes family fun and fitness!
Catholic Schools Week
Along with Catholic Schools nationwide, SMS shares the good news about Catholic Schools by participating in Catholic Schools Week. Visit the National Catholic Schools Week site for more information.
Clay on Steele
Funded through a grant, each class is given the opportunity to visit Clay on Steele and create a piece of pottery.
Destination Imagination (DI)
SMS give students the opportunity to participate in Destination Imagination (DI). Students in grades K - 2 can participate in the exhibition level of DI called the Rising Stars if they want to get their feet wet before joining a competitive team at the elementary level (grades 1 - 5). The middle level is for students in grades 6 - 8. Under the supervision of a parent volunteer, seven member teams use creative and critical thinking skills to solve challenges. SMS has had much success with DI, sending teams to the Regional, State and Global levels for many years . Eighth Grade Class Trip
Each spring the graduating class takes a trip.
An integral part of instruction, many field trips are taken throughout the course of the school year. Some field trip destinations have been to Heritage Hill State Park, Roncalli High School, The Neville Museum, Point Beach, Woodland Dunes and various local schools for musical and/or drama performances.
Fit & Fun Day
Sponsored by Families First and Kewaunee County Public Health, SMS students, staff, parents, friends and families participate in Fit & Fun Day.

Students in grades 7 and 8 are invited to join the Algoma Public School football program.
Forensics participation is incorporated into the grade 7/8 Language Arts Program.
SMS participates in the National Geographic Society's Geography Bee, sending their winner on to take the State qualifying written test.
Jump Rope For Heart
SMS students raise money each year for the American Heart Association by participating the the Jump Rope for Heart campaign.
Kindergarten Screening is used to identify a child's strengths and weaknesses in various areas and helps to determine kindergarten readiness. SMS holds screening each spring. Call the school office for more information.
Knights of Columbus Student Recognition Award
Each quarter the KOC presents one student from each grade a Student Recognition Award. At the recommendation of the teacher, this award is based on a student's behavior, citizenship, community service, grades, effort and/or overall improvement.
Red Ribbon Week
Each year the students of SMS take a pledge to live drug free lives by participating in Red Ribbon week.

SMS students participate in a Spelling Bee. Students participate in 'leveled' Spelling Bees. This gives student representatives from the entire school an opportunity to compete against age-appropriate classmates at each of the individual grade levels; K - Grade 2, Grades 3 - 5, and Grades 6 - 8.
Each winter and spring the entire student body at SMS participates in a musical theatrical production. This gives the entire school the chance to work together as well as each student the chance to develop their individual skills such as acting, singing, dancing, prop, scenery and costume preparation and back stage management.
Students are invited to join the Algoma Public School track program.
Students are invited to join the Algoma Public School volleyball program.
